How To Be More Sustainable In The Kitchen This Holiday Season!

Created by: Andi Haven

With the holidays right around the corner, Green Tips knows just how messy holiday baking can get.

When baking, are you constantly reaching for a paper towel to dry your hands, clean the countertops, or wipe up a spill off of the floor?

If this is you, next time consider using a reusable kitchen towel.

Reuseable kitchen towels cost between $1-$3 per towel and can be reused over 600 times before being replaced. If you compare this to a roll of paper towels, which cost nearly $2 per roll, reuseable kitchen towels can save you upwards of $200 per year.

In addition, the US currently produces 13 billion pounds of waste per year from paper towels alone, not to mention the .06 lbs of carbon dioxide contamination produced by a single paper towel.

Some other ways you can practice being more sustainable in the kitchen during the holidays are:

  • Storing baking products in glass containers

  • Buying baking products in bulk

  • Composting

  • Buying products in recyclable containers

  • Investing in long-lasting cookware

  • Buying ingredients at your local farmers market

  • Shopping using reuseable canvas bags

When doing your holiday baking this year, keep in mind what small steps you can take in the kitchen to become more sustainable. Although you may think these steps are small, you can make a huge difference in the world.

Stop producing waste and start baking cleaner!
